A china cup with the markings for P & O - 'The Old Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company' circa 1835 - 1972. The cup with the rope twist legends P&O entwined below a half faced sun logo with rope border. Marked to the underside with 'ASHWORTH BROs. REAL CHINA. IRONSTONE.' (1861-1968)
It came to us with a sticker saying it was a wreck cup from SS Egypt which was involved in a collision in 1922 and sank. My research has not cemented that this is from the Egypt.
The cup itself would not hold liquid unless restored but the beauty of its age and significance is not lost. P and O collectors I'm sure would find a spot for this on your shelf.
Measures 8cm high x 10cm wide x 8.5cm diameter.
