No. 437

A large whale tooth depicting the last Hull whaleship 'Diana' catching a whale in the ice in Baffin Bay, North Atlantic ocean.  The tooth weighs 585 grams and measures 18cm x 7 x 4.75 so a really good size. The reverse reads 'the last Hull Whaler. WHALESHIP DIANA. MASTER RICHARD WELLS. WRECKED DONNA NOOK 1869. no loss of life'

Research tells us 'Diana' was built in Germany in 1840 and sailed out of Hull, she later had a steam engine fitted. In 1866 whilst on a whaling expedition in Baffin bay she became stuck in the ice, trapped for over six months. Many of the crew died and there is a memorial fountain in the town of Lerwick, Shetland Islands to remember her crew. In 1869 Diana encountered a strong gale and was washed into the Donna Nook sands on the Lincolnshire coast and broke up. Her crew were rescued by the lifeboat North Briton. Her loss ended the whaling industry in Hull.
