No. 434

A standing whale tooth on a wooden base with an American theme. Depicting a compass rose to the top, the lady Liberty sat on a drum holding an anchor above the cartouche 'LIBERTY'. Measures 17cm x 6.5 x 4.5.

The statue of Liberty is a figure of Libertas, a robed Roman liberty goddess. After it's dedication the statue became an icon of freedom and of the US. In early American history, two female figures were frequently used as cultural symbols of the nation, much like Brittania for the UK or Marianne for France.
