A brass and teak submarine compass with hinged carrying handle lovingly called a 'Faithful Freddie'. These were first introduced by the Royal Navy in 1909 for the tight spaces of the conning tower in a submarine or on a landing craft.
Makers plate reads 'WHYTE THOMSON & Co. MAKERS. PATT 178. GLASGOW. NO 75'. Brass hinged viewing window with small sliding doors for using the compass secretly at night. Painted red and green iron compensating balls. Compass inside, with safety lock, by the makers KELVIN BOTTOMLEY & BAIRD LTD, without fluid.
