A recently polished brass and teak submarine compass with hinged carrying handle lovingly called a 'Faithful Freddie'. Makers plate reads 'KELVIN BOTTONLEY & BAIRD LTD. PATTERN 185. BINNACLE NO. 274 K. 16-20 CAMBRIDGE ST. GLASGOW'.  Mock wooden compensating balls and compass inside, without fluid. These were first introduced by the Royal Navy in 1909 for the tight spaces of the conning tower in a submarine or on a landing craft.

Measures 44cm high. Weighs 8.5 kilos.
